German Gymnasium, London

January 01, 2020

Just outside Kings Cross / St Pancras International station, The German Gymnasium epitomises London as a centre for international food, drink and entertainment. Greeted with a huge open plan space, the restaurant-come-high-end bar will suit formal friends and family events, as much as it would the casual visitor looking for positive vibes and quality. Keep the Rothaus coming!

NeoPolitan Pizzeria, Nantes, France

Fantastic food, ambiance and service combine to make NeoPolitan Pizzeria a hidden gem in Nantes. Close to the main train station and opposite the Chateau des ducs de Bretagne, NeoPolitan will perfectly complement a sight-seeing day in the city. Say a grand bonjour to the owner, David Guepin, from his friends at Adventure 176!

Utila Dive Centre (UDC)

Clear, patient, professional, work hard - play hard; UDC is THE centre for recreational and vocational diving in the Americas. Located on Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras, UDC is surrounded by rich, warm waters with Eagle Rays, Dolphins, Turtles and a wide variety of tropical fish on display. Internal flights from San Pedro Sula and Roatan available through CM Airlines. Alternatively take the island ferry from La Ceiba.

Maison Harlem, New York, United States

Quite simply, this place became my daytime refuge while in New York. The staff are beyond welcoming and easy-going, multi-lingual (English, French, Spanish) and professional. The food is the best I had in the city while there - try the homemade granola for brunch - and the relaxed set-up allows for working or socializing. A little live music gem of a bar / restaurant within the fast changing Harlem area.

Azimut Hotel, Moscow, Russia

Smart, comfortable and conveniently located in Smolenskaya, this hotel was an excellent base of operations for exploring the city. The food in particular was excellent, as were the staff and room facilities. Be sure to choose a high floor for the exceptional city-scape views.

Greewald (USTA Hotels), Russia

About an hour's drive from Yekaterinberg, Greenwald is a Russian lakeside oasis that offers both relaxation and excitement.

Situated next to a large still lake in the middle of a forest, the hotel caters for adventure seekers with bikes, paddle boards, swimming facilities, a beach, banya and cabin-style accommodation. Equally, there are a multitude of options for those who wish to relax, with catering and entertainment facilities suitable to a 4-Star standard. A true Russian countryside experience.

Exodus Adventures

I've been to both Guyana and Morocco with Exodus. Seamless and extremely professional in both cases, they put on superb tours with highly knowledgeable and experienced staff, delivering magical experiences. Repeat business discounts available.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid facilitated my trip to Nepal in 2016 (Annapurna Explorer) and what a great job they did. Using trusted and experienced local guides, Intrepid put together a fantastic itinerary that challenged the body and excited the mind. Plenty of trips on offer worldwide.

Iwokrama River Lodge, Guyana

Commonly used by TV crews as a base for jungle filming, Iwokrama is a must for any tropical adventurers, rich with bird life and monkeys. Take in the Kaieteur Falls before landing and enjoy the local hospitality.

Surama Ecolodge, Guyana

Wonderful memories from this place in the savannas of Guyana. All the facilities you require with views of the open plains and a lovely communal area for meals and socials.

Pod Boutique Hostel, Singapore

Not wanting to spend a fortune in Singapore but still want a little comfort? Try Pod - a semi-luxury hostel in a great central location. Built in a double or single bunk-bed style, Pod provides clean and comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price. Excellent wifi and buffet breakfast available.

Skyline Luge, Rotorua, New Zealand

Insane speed, raw racing, exhilarating - not even near enough space here to describe how much fun this is. Only a brake and steering to hand as you guide a sledge through a downhill course. Once is definitely never enough!

Skyline Luge, Queenstown, New Zealand

Exactly the same luge set-up as Rotorua but with a more open course, the views from the top of Skyline Queenstown are simply spectacular. With bungee jumping, paragliding, hiking and mountain biking all available you'll find it difficult to leave. Great food / drink options at the top too.

Raging Thunder Rafting, Australia

A must for any east coast traveler, Raging Thunder offer a range of rafting packages and other adventure activities. Make sure you stand close to a lively bunch for banter and rafting performance - nothing worse than a mute crew....

Three Peaks Challenge, UK

A grueling UK based challenge to hike the highest mountain of Wales (Snowden), England (Scafell Pike) and Scotland (Ben Nevis) in a 24hr period. Transport and guiding can be done by yourselves, but TPC offer a central booking system for shared and private trips - prices from £329.

Osprey Travel Bags

As you may have gathered already, I can't big these guys up enough. Originating in California back in 1974, Mike Pfotenhauer and his team take real pride in their workmanship, producing highly durable and thoughtful products.
